Overview
Monaspace is a code-focused font superfamily from GitHub Next and Lettermatic. Its five type families have distinct visual styles but share compatible metrics, so developers can mix them without disrupting alignment in code.
It addresses the trade-off between the uniform grid of traditional monospace fonts and more expressive typography. Features such as texture healing, ligatures, character variants, and variable axes let users customize how code looks, provided their editor supports the relevant font features.
Key Features
- Five distinct type families with compatible character metrics.
- Variable fonts with weight, italic, and width axes, alongside static font cuts.
- Texture healing, enabled through the
caltOpenType feature. - Coding ligatures organized into stylistic sets that can be configured individually.
- Optional character variants for figures, letters, symbols, and select ligatures.
- Static builds patched with Nerd Fonts icons.
- Desktop and web font formats, plus frozen fonts for environments with limited feature configuration.
Use Cases
- Developers choosing a distinctive monospace font for an editor or terminal, while retaining consistent character widths.
- Teams that want to adjust font weight, width, or italic style using variable fonts.
- Users who want texture healing or coding ligatures and can configure OpenType features in their editor.
- Web developers embedding a code font and controlling features through CSS.
- Users of environments with limited font-feature controls who can use the frozen font builds.
Getting Started
Download the latest release from the GitHub releases page, then install the font files for your platform. For macOS, the repository also provides an install script:
bash util/install_macos.sh
See the README for platform-specific installation and editor configuration details.
Alternatives
- nerd-fonts: Nerd Fonts patches existing programming fonts with icon glyphs, while Monaspace is a family of coding typefaces with variable axes and OpenType features.

Considerations
- Texture healing, ligatures, and character variants depend on application support and configuration. The README includes setup guidance for Visual Studio Code.
- Variable fonts are not yet well-supported in Visual Studio Code, and mixing multiple fonts there is not yet possible, according to the project documentation.
- Static builds include many files because they provide combinations of the available axis stops.
- Nerd Fonts glyphs may not render correctly in every environment.
- The project describes Monaspace as a GitHub Next exploration and says it is not a supported product.
