TreeMap-Disk-Visualizer: Visualize and Clean Up Disk Space

TreeMap is a TypeScript disk-space visualizer and cleanup app built with Electron, Express 5, and a Rust scanning core. It maps files by size and helps desktop users find and safely reclaim space on macOS and Windows, with web mode available on Linux.

TreeMap is a feature-rich, safety-focused disk-usage workbench, but its rapid development and highly concentrated contributor base make it a young project to evaluate before relying on its automation.

Good fit if

  • You want visual, local disk analysis and cleanup workflows on macOS or Windows, or are comfortable running the web mode on Linux.
  • You value previews, Trash-based deletion, and recovery options over a minimal disk-usage utility.
  • You can work with a Node.js 20 or newer environment when running from source, and want an MIT-licensed project.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need a published Linux desktop installer, or an Intel Mac desktop build. The README describes Linux web mode and an Apple Silicon-only macOS build.
  • You need a mature project with broadly distributed maintenance. The project is new, changes quickly, and most contributions come from one person.
  • You need cleanup actions for data the app deliberately treats as unsafe to remove, such as game installs or original media files.

Overview

TreeMap is a disk-space visualizer and cleanup app built with Electron, Express 5, TypeScript, and a Rust scanning core. It scans a folder on your computer and maps its contents into size-proportional treemaps, helping you see which files and folders are using disk space. The desktop app is available for macOS and Windows; Linux users can run it in a browser through web mode.

It is aimed at people who want more than a list of large files: TreeMap includes views for trends, duplicates, and cleanup suggestions, while routing deletions through a reviewable cart and the system Trash. Its README emphasizes local operation and safeguards such as previews and an undo vault.

Key Features

  • Scan folders and explore their contents in treemap, sunburst, circle, Voronoi, grid, and isometric Disk City views.
  • Review disk usage through dashboards, file-type breakdowns, history, and growth trends.
  • Find identical files using streamed SHA-256 hashing, and near-duplicate images using perceptual hashes.
  • Stage cleanup suggestions and review a dry-run manifest before moving files to the system Trash.
  • Use an Undo Vault for supported cleanup runs, with verified copies that can be restored while retained.
  • Run scans on a schedule, set ignore rules, or define Autopilot policies with previews and limits.
  • Use the HTTP API, MCP tools, or VS Code extension to access TreeMap from other workflows.

Use Cases

  • Home users can locate large downloads, old projects, and duplicate files when a disk is running low.
  • Developers can identify regenerable build and dependency directories before deciding what to remove.
  • People managing game or media libraries can inspect storage use and review the limited cache or derivative cleanup options.
  • Teams with multiple computers can opt into Fleet summaries to check disk capacity across machines without sharing file trees.

What you need

Detected in the repository

  • Node.js >=20 (from package.json)
  • A Dockerfile, so it can run in a container; a Compose file sets up the related services
  • A test suite and automated checks on GitHub Actions

Getting Started

For web mode, with Node.js 20 or newer:

npm install
npm run build
npm start

Then open http://127.0.0.1:4280. Desktop downloads are available from the GitHub Releases page. See the README for platform-specific setup and build instructions.

Considerations

  • This is a recently created project with frequent commits and releases, and development is strongly concentrated in one contributor. That pace brings active changes but also means adopters should check current releases and test critical workflows.
  • Source runs require Node.js 20 or newer. Building the native scanner or packaging desktop apps also requires Rust; ordinary installation of the desktop app does not.
  • The published desktop downloads cover Apple Silicon macOS and Windows. Linux is supported through web mode, while Linux desktop packaging is left to users to build.
  • Some features are platform-dependent or explicitly limited. For example, video shrinking is currently offered only on macOS, and several cloud or hardware-related functions depend on available services or system support.
  • Cleanup can move files to Trash and uses additional safeguards, but users should still inspect the manifest and confirm the intended items before committing a batch.
