This is a promising, actively updated Mac mail client, but its very early stage and single-contributor development make it a less established choice for essential mail workflows.
Good fit if
- You use macOS 15.3 or later and want Mailflare support alongside other email accounts.
- Offline access and local mail storage are important to your workflow.
- You are comfortable evaluating a new project maintained primarily by one contributor.
Look elsewhere if
- You need a client for an operating system other than macOS.
- Your organization requires a mature project with a broader contributor base.
- You need AI features without sending the mail they read to an AI provider, and do not want to configure Ollama locally.

Overview
Mailflare for macOS is a Swift desktop email client for macOS, built for the Mailflare self-hosted mail platform and also compatible with Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, Yahoo, Fastmail and custom mail servers. It aims to make mail fast to open and available offline by saving it on your Mac, with queued actions sent after reconnecting.
It suits Mac users who want one client for Mailflare and other email accounts, plus optional AI-assisted search, summaries and drafting. Mailflare is actively developing: recent commits and releases are recorded, but the project is very new and its code contributions currently come from one person.
Key Features
- Connect to Mailflare with a password, app password or QR code, or set up other supported mail providers and custom servers.
- Switch between multiple accounts and view inboxes separately or together.
- Read mail offline and sync queued actions when the connection returns.
- Compose rich-text messages with attachments, drafts, templates, replies, forwards, Cc and Bcc.
- Organize mail by archiving, deleting, flagging, moving to folders or marking as junk, and search with unread or flagged filters.
- Enable AI writing and an assistant through a configured provider. AI-created messages remain drafts until you send them.
- Block remote images, receive new-mail notifications and use macOS keyboard shortcuts.
Use Cases
- Mailflare server users who want a native Mac client that keeps mail available offline.
- People managing personal and work addresses across Mailflare, Gmail, iCloud or other supported providers in one app.
- Users who want AI help finding messages, summarizing threads or drafting replies, while reviewing and sending messages themselves.
- Mac users who prefer local Ollama for AI processing, or who want provider credentials stored in the macOS Keychain.

Getting Started
You need macOS 15.3 or later. To build from source, install Xcode 16 or later, clone mailflare-core next to this repository, open Mailflare.xcodeproj, and run the Mailflare scheme. See the README for setup and account details.
Considerations
- This is a new project with a short operating history. Recent commits and releases indicate ongoing work, but one contributor currently accounts for all recorded contributions, so maintenance continuity is a consideration.
- It requires macOS 15.3 or later and is not presented as a cross-platform client.
- AI features are optional, but mail read by the assistant or writer is sent to the provider you choose. Ollama is available for keeping that processing on your Mac.
- The project is licensed under AGPL-3.0. Review the license obligations before incorporating or distributing modified versions.
