Task Queues

Task queues let applications defer work that does not need to happen during a user request. A producer places jobs in a queue, and one or more workers process them separately. This approach helps keep applications responsive, handle bursts of work, retry failed jobs, and schedule tasks for later or at recurring intervals. Queues can also distribute processing across multiple workers or machines.

Open source tools in this area range from lightweight libraries to distributed systems, with options for different storage backends, worker models, scheduling, and monitoring. When choosing one, consider maintenance activity, license, deployment requirements, reliability features, and how well it integrates with your application and infrastructure. Task queues are useful for developers and teams running web services, data pipelines, notifications, and other workloads that benefit from asynchronous processing.
