Double Shot addresses a specific macOS sleep problem with useful agent-aware behavior, but it is a very new project maintained by one contributor.
Good fit if
- You use macOS and run one of the supported coding agents, or can add your own agent name.
- You need lid-closed operation and are comfortable granting the one-time administrator permission it requires.
- You want a Swift menu bar utility with recent commits and releases, and are comfortable adopting a project whose contributor base is currently concentrated in one person.
Look elsewhere if
- You need a Windows or Linux solution, or need to detect the agent inside the Cursor editor, which the README says is not detected.
- Your policy does not allow a privileged sudoers rule for lid-closed mode.
- You need evidence of established multi-contributor maintenance or a record of issue and pull-request handling; the project is new, has one contributor, and has no recorded issue closures or merged pull requests in the measured period.

Overview
Double Shot is a Swift and SwiftUI menu bar app for macOS, built for people whose long-running AI agent work gets interrupted when their Mac sleeps. It detects activity from tools including Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor Agent, Copilot CLI, OpenCode, Amp, and Aider, then releases the keep-awake hold after activity has been quiet for a grace period.
It can also keep a Mac running with its lid closed, a mode that requires a one-time administrator setup. This makes it relevant for unattended runs or a closed Mac in a bag, though it is specifically a macOS utility rather than a general-purpose agent monitor.
Key Features
- Detects work from several named AI coding agents and supports adding custom process names.
- Keeps the Mac awake while detected agents are working, then releases the hold after they go quiet.
- Offers timed keep-awake sessions and an until-turned-off option.
- Supports lid-closed operation after a one-time privileged setup.
- Stops lid-closed operation when the Mac reaches a warm temperature level and can stop at a configured low battery level.
- Provides URL commands for toggling, setting a duration, and opening the panel or settings.
Use Cases
- A developer running a long Claude Code, Codex, or other supported agent task can let it continue without manually managing sleep settings.
- Someone leaving a Mac closed while a background agent runs can use lid-closed mode, provided they complete the administrator setup and account for heat and battery limits.
- A user who needs a temporary keep-awake period for a download, presentation, or other task can choose a preset duration without using agent detection.
- A developer with a custom agent process can add its script or command name so Double Shot treats it as work in progress.

Getting Started
Install with Homebrew:

See the README for first-run setup, lid-closed permissions, safety settings, and build instructions.
Considerations
- The measured project status is New, with only a few days of history. It has recent commits and releases, but the measured contributor count is one, with all contributions concentrated there; issue closures and merged pull requests were not recorded in the measured period.
- Lid-closed mode requires administrator setup and modifies a sudoers rule to allow a limited set of power-management commands. Review the README's setup, recovery, and uninstall instructions before enabling it.
- The README says manually downloaded app versions are not yet notarized by Apple, so macOS requires an additional security approval on first launch. The Homebrew cask clears the quarantine flag.
- Agent detection is process and activity based. The README notes that Cursor's editor-integrated agent is not detected, and custom agents are treated as active until they exit.
- Building from source requires macOS 14 or later and Xcode 16 or later.
- The project is MIT-licensed; review the repository's license before incorporating or redistributing its code.
- The README credits KeepingYouAwake and Amphetamine as inspirations, while stating Double Shot is written from scratch. See KeepingYouAwake and Amphetamine for related keep-awake tools.
